The M4V video format stands as a creation of Apple. It works as a video container system and shares certain similarities with the MP4 format. However, the difference here is the possibility of DRM copy protection for M4V files. Apple employs the M4V encoding format in its iTunes Store. Apple's FairPlay copy protection comes in handy to stop unauthorized duplication of M4V files. M4V videos protected with FairPlay DRM are labeled in QuickTime as 'AVC0 Media'. You can play M4V video files in Media Player Classic, K-Multimedia Player, RealPlayer, Zoom Player, VLC media player, MPlayer, DivX Plus Player, and Nero Showtime. As you just saw, M4V files can also be opened and played using Apple iTunes and the Apple QuickTime Player (included with Nero Multimedia Suite).
FLV is short for Flash Video. This format is used to send audio and video content using Adobe Air or Adobe Flash Player over the Internet. All platforms except iOS support the format. It is worth noting that FLV has been the standard format for all the embedded videos found on websites like YouTube and Hulu. At present, there is a shift to other formats as Adobe has discontinued Flash. You can open FLV files on Adobe Animate and other players like VLC and Winamp. In fact, most of the popular media players support this format. iPhone and Android devices play files of this format using open source software and specific browsers.
